QUESTION 1: WITH YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A SOFTWARE ENGINEER WORKING WITH ONE OF THE FOREMOST LEGAL TECH COMPANIES IN NIGERIA, DO YOU THINK ITS NECESSARY THAT LAWYERS FORGO THEIR LAWYERING TO LEARN HOW TO CODE?

ANSWER: I am of the opinion that Lawyers do not necessarily have to learn to code to keep abreast with emerging technologies. Yes, Lawyers should read up on, be aware of and appreciate technology, but I do not think everyone needs to learn to code. Let’s all focus on what we know how to do best and be great at it. However, for any lawyer already on that path, its great! Just stick to what works for you.

QUESTION 2: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE LEGAL INDUSTRY?

ANSWER: Technology is definitely a force that has come to stay. It is a mechanized, faster and optimal way of achieving things; anything. That stated, I believe that we would get to a point where Lawyers will be charged to doing more tactical and technical things which will be fun, automated and easy with the aid of technology definitely. The era of piles of paper work will dwindle, thanks to technology , lawyers would then have time to do more productive and efficient work for their firms.

QUESTION 3: AS A SOFTWARE ENGINEER WORKING ON CREATING TECH SOLUTIONS FOR LAWYERS, WHAT FASCINATES YOU MOST ABOUT LEGAL TECHNOLOGY?

ANSWER: The Nigerian Legal industry for some years now, to me, has been stagnant (same old events happening in a circle, nothing new), but with the technology wave, being a Lawyer seems more fun and exciting. Now, I look forward to being on platforms in the nearest future and speaking about how I contributed in my way to the technovation(I just made this up) of the Nigerian Legal Industry.

QUESTION 4: FINALLY, FOR LAWYERS THAT WOULD WANT TO LEARN TO CODE,AND ARE PROBABLY FASCINATED BY THE CONCEPT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, HOW DO YOU THINK THEY CAN GET STARTED? WHAT LANGUAGE WOULD BE BEST TO START WITH?

ANSWER: I believe they can get started by first learning a programming language and reading all they can to really understand it. For those looking at getting started in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, you should definitely start with learning Python. Its very easy, once you grasp the basics. For lawyers looking into programming, please learn at your pace, do not let anyone put you under any form of pressure.
